If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
(Deuteronomy 13:1-3)
But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
(Deuteronomy 18:20-22)
According to the Biblical test for a prophet, the one and only legitimate and reliable test, no others are accepted, if a prophet makes even one prophecy that fails to come about, then he is not a prophet of God and no attention should be given to anything he has to say. No exceptions. Period!
Now this person and his followers may come up with one excuse after another why one or more of his prophecies failed, but that does not justify him not passing the one and only Biblical Test for a prophet. There are NO accepted excuses. Period!
They may even have the backing of an organization or church. They may have made dozens of prophecies or more that have come true. That makes no difference. If they give one prophecy that fails, then they are NOT of God! They are not to be listened to. No exceptions. Period!
Over the last few decades there have been so many claiming to be prophets and turn out to be false. With the creation of the Internet that number has increased many times over. They get on the Internet. Make a fancy website, then start sprouting off their nonsense. Some of what they say is so hairbrained and insane, yet because they have it on a website people will believe them. Then if anyone criticizes them, they will twist the meaning of scripture around to fit their needs and try to silence or shame those who are criticizing them. If they are truly a prophet of God, then they would not stoop to this. They would in fact welcome criticism and prove their point. In the Bible there are many examples of REAL prophets being criticized and overcoming it by sticking to the truth and not twisting scripture in a lame attempt to silence or shame those who doubt them.
If they or anyone has a problem with this, then they can take it up with God. As for me, I will trust God's Words over that of a man or organization no matter who or what they claim to be.
Additional Bible verses dealing with false prophets (these are just a few of the many ones found in the Bible):
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
(1 John 4:1)
And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.
(Matthew 24:11)
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
(Matthew 7:15-20)
Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.
(Jeremiah 23:16)
Then the Lord said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
(Jeremiah 14:14)
